North Korea conducted a test fire of an upgraded intercontinental ballistic missile
(ICBM) in what Pyongyang has described as the “world’s most powerful strategic deterrent” and as a
“warning to perceived enemies”. The missile, which can be nuclear-armed, was in the air for 87
minutes, reached an altitude of 7,000 kilometres and flew a distance of around 1,000 kilometres
before falling into the Sea of Japan, approximately 200 kilometres west of Hokkaido, outside Japan’s
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
